Donation of Sefer Torah to Yeshiva

Boruch Volovik

In the business world, Yoram Eliyahu is known for his real estate developments, which include a beachfront hotel in Miami, and rental units which are used as student housing at colleges in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Some may know him as a political activist, deeply concerned with conditions in his native Israel, but in his own community of Great Neck, New York, Yoram is known as a family man with a strong dedication to education and community.

The North Shore Hebrew Academy has been a cornerstone of Jewish life in Great Neck and the surrounding area, since it was founded in 1954. Through much of its existence, it has served the younger members of the community. In 2001, they opened their long-awaited high school division , so they could continue to serve local youth in some of their most formative years. The program was successful and quickly gathered a student body eager to learn. The goal was to create a learning environment with a first rate academic program as well as a dedication to the Hebrew language, support of the State of Israel and a strong foundation in all aspects of Jewish life. Within five years of its founding, the high school was ready to grow, and built a new wing devoted to state of the art facilities to support all aspects of the curriculum.

Upon learning of the new facility, Yoram wanted to help. His strong belief in both education generally and Jewish education specifically was a driving force in contributing in whatever way he could. He felt that the donation of a Sefer Torah would be a meaningful gift. He donated one of the twelve Torah scrolls which were dedicated at the opening of the new wing and are still in use today.

Yoram and his family have continued to be a part of the life of the North Shore Hebrew Academy, as his children are students at the school.
